About Caldera
Caldera is on a mission to make sustainable, zero-carbon heat accessible and affordable for industry. Leveraging patented technology that has captured attention from 12 sectors across 15 countries, we’re tackling one of the climate crisis’s most overlooked challenges: industrial heat.
Based in Hampshire, just outside London, our headquarters serve as a comprehensive centre for innovation. Here, we manage everything from initial product development and prototyping to full-scale production. Our team, united by a passion for climate solutions, brings together a diverse range of expertise and backgrounds. Together, we’re not just imagining a cleaner future; we’re building it.
History
Founded
Caldera is founded by James Macnaghten and Guy Winstanley to pave the way for sustainable and affordable energy storage.
The first in the world
We’re the first in the world to create a heat storage material using volcanic rocks and recycled aluminium.
Invention
We invent our vacuum insulation and heat extraction systems and combine our newly developed technologies in a 100kWh prototype.
100 kWh unit
We fit the first 100 kWh unit in our CEO’s home. It’s still there today and shows that our technology is a safe and reliable solution to provide heat using 100% sustainable energy.
Big success
Our crowdfunding campaign is a big success – 1,300 people invest on CrowdCube, raising £1.5m and exceeding our goal by 250%.
Award
We’re awarded a total of £0.8m in UK government funding to help us achieve the full potential of our technology. We put ten 100 kWh units on long-term test in homes and a church and begin development of a larger-scale unit for industrial heat decarbonization.
Win
We win £4.3m of UK government funding for a follow-on project to develop a full-scale test facility at our factory and demonstrate a 4 MWh industrial storage boiler.
Full size product ready
We celebrate another highly successful crowdfunding campaign, raising £1.5m. Our industrial storage boiler demonstrator is commissioned and achieves its target to charge at 1MWe, and discharge steam at 1,000 kg/h.
